Morphosis [THOM MAYNE] Seoul Exhibition

1972년 톰메인에 의해 창립된 모포시스는 친환경, 정부기관 및 교육시설 등 도시와 환경, 공공이익, 지역사회와 밀접한 관계를 두고 그 영향을 고려한 미래지향적 디자인 프로세스를 진행해 왔다. 또한 문화예술에 대한 관심과 이를 비롯한 미학적 공간구성을 중점으로 연구하는데, 2022년 50주년을 맞아 ‘오렌지 카운티 미술관’과 ‘성수동 갤러리 55’를 오픈했으며, 현재 ‘달라스 크로우 미술관’과 ‘LA 한인 역사 박물관’ 등을 진행 중이다. 한편 소규모 개인 프로젝트들과 웰빙에 관한 여러 현대적인 기능들 그리고 각종 스마트 시티 연구에도 참여하고 있다.
‘갤러리 55’에서 진행되는 이번 전시 ‘CAPSULE 1’은 한국에서 처음 공개되는 모포시스 디자인 프로세스의 일부로서, 톰메인의 작품시리즈 ‘COMBINATORIAL FORM’을 시작으로 시각적 예술에서 도시의 미학을 발견하고 이성적 사고를 거쳐 건축물로 발전시키며 실내공간과 그에 속한 가구에 이르기까지 그 테마와 개념이 연속되는 디자인 과정의 예시이다.
전시는 크게 4개 부분으로 구성되는데, 7층 갤러리 입장 후 좌측부터 시계방향으로 전개되며 8층 라운지의 프로젝션을 통해 세부적인 설명이 추가된다.
처음 등장하는 톰메인의 추상작품 시리즈는 알고리즘과 디지털 프로그램을 통해 여러 버전으로 제작된 10여년간의 작업으로, 자연적인 형상과 텍스쳐의 심미적 언어들이 이후 실제 프로젝트로 연결됨을 암시한다.
두번쨰는 중앙 조형물과도 연계되는 프로젝트 스터디 모델 시리즈로 전시대 하단부터 상단 방향으로 도시, 건축, 인테리어, 가구 등에 이르는 개념적용 과정을 보여주고 모포시스의 주요 디자인 요소가 발전되는 과정을 설명한다.
세번째는 대표 준공작들의 사진전으로 앞서 전개된 디자인 개념과 철학을 출판물과 함께 시공간적 결과물로서 보여주는 단계로 각 프로젝트에서 고민했던 이슈에 대한 내용을 공유한다.
마지막으로 전시현장 여건에 따라 전시해설 등을 통해 아트웍 시리즈와 20개 건축 프로젝트들에 대한 더 자세한 내용들이 슬라이스 쇼로 공개되며, 특정 전문가 그룹에 대해서는 이와 같은 디자인을 실현시킬 수 있는 심화된 신기술과 PRE-FAB 공법에 대한 내용까지 설명된다.
모포시스의 작품들은 디지털 기술을 기반으로 하는 파라메트릭 디자인이지만 그 모습은 오히려 자연과 인간을 닮은 미학적 접근과 도시적 공공성을 내포하며, 새로운 경험과 감동을 유도하는 브레인 스토밍 장치로서 미래로 향하는 발전적 사고의 과정이다.

Founded by Thom Mayne in 1972, Morphosis has been pursuing a future oriented design philosophy that explores the relationship be tween the built and natural environment, technology, and the human experience, both individual and communal. Their work spans a variety of projec t t ypes and scales internationally, from urban planning and transit stations to commercial skyscrapers, museums, and educational facilities. Mor pho sis has always been interested in the intersection of art and architecture in 2022, the firm celebrated their 50th anniversary with the opening of t wo cultural projects: the Orange County museum of Art in Costa Mesa, California, and the Seongsu Dong Gallery 55. Other ongoing cultural projects include the Crow Museum of Asian Art, the University of Texas Performance Hall, and the Korean American National Museum in Los Angeles, California.

CAPSULE 1 at Gallery 55 is a survey of the Morphosis design process, unveiled in Korea for the first time. CAPSULE 1 consists of four parts, unfolding sequentially through the gallery’s lower and upper floors.Opening the exhibition are Thom Mayne’s abstract pieces from his series “Combinatorial Form” which provide a conceptual entry wa y to Morphosis’ approach to design. The works are created through a conscious refinement of algorithmic generations, creating ambiguities and sp ontaneous results that resonate with both natural and urban systems.

The second part of the exhibition involves a series of project study models that showcase Morphosis’ essential design process an d its expression across urban, architectural, interior, and object scales.Expanding upon the study models, the third portion of the exhibit features the results of the design process, with photographs o f details and overall imagery of major completed projects by Morphosis, such as the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, Kolon One & Only Tower, and th e Sejong M Bridge.The final part of the exhibition features digital projections that elaborate on the technological advancements and construction methods used by Morphosis for the 20 architectural projects featured, as well as imparting more details of Mayne’s artworks and process.

Thom Mayne founded Morphosis as an interdisciplinary and collective practice involved in experimental design and research in 1972.

Mayne’s distinguished honors include the Pritzker Prize (2005) and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal (2013).

He was served on the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities from 2009-2016 under President Obama.

In 1972, he was part of the founding faculty of SCIArc, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, in Los Angeles, CA. Since then, he has held teaching positions at Columbia, Yale, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, the University of Pennsylvania, and many other institutions around the world. Mayne was a Distinguished Professor at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design from 1993 ‒ 2018.

His artwork is held in leading museums across the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Chicago Art Institute, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and SFMOMA.

Recent buildings designed by Mayne include the US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, and the Eni Corporate Headquarters Campus in Milan, Italy.
